The essentials at a glance
.Three Lakes Region The route is very varied. It’s flat along the shores of the lakes and through the vineyards, but there are some climbs to overcome on the round trip to Laupen. You can expect to encounter some road traffic around the towns and on the northern side of Lake Biel. However, most of the route is on quiet side roads and partly on unpaved field and forest paths.
TOUR DESCRIPTION Lake Biel, Lake Murten and Lake Neuchâtel are the main attractions on this cycling tour through the Three Lakes region. Vast vegetable-growing areas, fragrant vineyards, stunning hills shaped by glaciers, river valleys and a fjord-like reservoir set this diverse region between the Jura and the Alps apart from the rest. Countless bird species nest on the lakes and rivers here and, at the south-eastern tip of Lake Neuchâtel, the Grande Cariçaie, which is Switzerland’s largest contiguous wetland, never fails to enchant visitors with its rich flora and fauna. Indeed, the stiff sedge sour grass species is just as much at home here as kingfishers and beavers are. The picturesque old towns of Murten and Laupen are steeped in history, while Yverdon-les-Bains is known for its spa culture, which was even popular with the Romans. Speaking of bathing … on what other cycling tour will you find so many inviting bodies of water to cool off in as on your journey through the Three Lakes region?
